Field ants are often confused with carpenter ants but they are not as likely to forage indoors.

 

Identification

Black, brown, red, or combinations of these colors. Workers range in size from about 3 to 7 mm long.

Common locations

Field ants are common in yards, landscaping mulch, fields and wooded areas. They are soil nesters that construct medium-sized mounds of about 8 to 10 inches.

Diet

They are scavengers and feed on other insects and nectar from flowers.

Additional Info

A group of about a dozen species of ants are known as field ants. They rarely enter homes, but are commonly seen crawling on porches, foundations and decks.
