Also called the citronella ant, this ant has a citrus-like odor when crushed.

Identification

The larger yellow ant is a yellow-brown ant up to 7mm long. This ant has very small eyes.

Common locations

Their nests are found under rocks, logs, stumps, concrete slabs and in crawlspaces. Piles of soil may accumulate near the nest entrance.

Diet

These ants feed on the honeydew gathered from aphids and mealy bugs.

Additional Info

Larger yellow ants forage at night, tending the subterranean aphids and mealy bugs they “milk” to obtain honeydew. They do not feed on human foods.
