Wood roaches are not secretive; they are active both during the day and at night and they are less likely to scamper out of sight when approached.

Looks like

1/2 to 1 inch long dark chocolate brown, with a narrow tan line running along the outside edges of the wings and the area behind the head

Environment

The wood cockroach prefers the outdoors and usually is found in wood piles, in dead trees and under bark.

Usual location

The adult cockroaches are active during the spring and fall, and are frequently found in houses at this time. In the spring these insects are probably attracted to outside lights at night. The adult cockroaches are capable flyers, and they frequently fly to lights at night-especially the warm nights of early spring and fall. Usually it does not survive or multiply indoors.

Diet

Decaying vegetation and insects. Like all roaches they are carnivorous as well as cannibals.

Life Cycle

Wood roaches can live up to two years and females can produce almost 1,000 offspring in this time.

Health Risks

Do not infest houses-they are simply casual or accidental invaders.
