Wolf Spider

Wolf spiders are usually large, hairy spiders that are not associated with webs.

Identification

Wolf spiders vary greatly in size and, although the males are smaller, average 6-25mm.

Environment

Found in a variety of ground habitats-stream edges, gravel or sand bars, low vegetation and woodland leaf litter.

Life Cycle

The female wolf spider attaches an egg sac to her spinnerets and can be seen running across the ground with the sac held in this manner. She will often exhibit aggressive behavior when carrying an egg sac. After the spiderlings emerge from the casing, they climb to her abdomen and remain there for up to two weeks.

Health Risks

Wolf spiders can bite, but their bites are extremely rare and no more dangerous or painful than bee stings. They are nonaggressive and only known to bite when provoked.
