There are about 2,800 known species of termites throughout the world. The most common being the Subterranean termite which is found in Missouri and Oklahoma.  Subterranean termites are named because they build underground nests. Subterranean termites can be extremely destructive because they tunnel their way to wooden structures (like your home) to obtain food. Termites all share an appetite for wood and other cellulose-containing materials. Given enough time, they may feed on the wood until little is left but non-supportive remnants.

Many people fail to realize, until it’s too late, the extensive amount of damage that termites cause to modern homes. Since they remain concealed in the wood, and enter your home through underground leads, it is often not until the damage is extensive, that you realize you have a problem. Wood damaged by subterranean termites is often not noticed because the exterior surface usually must be removed to see the damage.
